Happy Stress Awareness Month🧠 I know everyone Happy Stress Awareness Month🧠 I know everyone has a different way to cope with stress. Usually, when I find myself in this situation, my brain is trying to process a million things. My work area is a mess☹️ I feel cluttered😥 I feel like I can’t breathe😰 My body is tense😖 My heart is racing🤎 I’m irritated by everything😡 My to do lists seem to keep getting longer. I’m either overeating or forgetting to eat. It’s hard to sleep. Whatever it is you need to do to get take yourself out in your current environment, even just for 10-30 minutes. ❇️Listen to your body. ❇️Move a little. Filipinos have no boundaries🤐 Or maybe we were Filipinos have no boundaries🤐 Or maybe we were never taught. I can’t speak for other Filipinos, but I did not learn about boundaries until several months ago. And did not have specific examples of what it could look like. I grew up taking in all the comments from titas about my weight or appearance like it was a normal form of greeting from someone. “Oh wow, tumaba ka yata.” or “Ay, nangitin ka na. Diba maputi ka non?” (Oh wow, you gained weight or oh, you got dark. Didn’t you used to have fair skin?). I used papaya soap when I was little hoping that my skin color would get lighter, so I won’t be seen as ugly. I have witnessed friends struggling to come into terms that they did not choose nursing or hate that they are nurses. I have friends who have cut off family members because their decisions were not in line with the typical Filipino expectations. I can go on and on, but I wanted to give examples of how Filipinos can start or continue to set boundaries for themselves. I’m awesome👏🏽 No, really. I fucking am. I’m awesome👏🏽 No, really. I fucking am. Say these phrases out loud: I am awesome. I am magic. I am strong. I am brave. I am worthy. I am enough. Did those phrases make you feel uncomfortable? 🤔 Why? Because you don’t believe them? I have been digging deeper when it comes to constantly seeking validation. One thing to remember is, when we constantly rely on other people for validation, we will never be happy. People will never meet your expectations. You are basically giving the people around you the power to control your emotions and dictate your selfworth. Instead of looking for outside validations, I urge you to start validating yourself. I woke up at 2:00AM to hike an active volcano in B I woke up at 2:00AM to hike an active volcano in Bali. Have you ever done a sunrise hike? You basically wake up early in the morning, hike in absolute pitch black, and try to get to the summit to witness the sunrise. I have only done a few and one of them was trekking Mt. The ANXIETY that I go through from this question🥲 OOF. Internally, I’m saying, please grow a personality and ask a more interesting question🤬 Anything, but the question “where are you REALLY from?” I was born in the Philippines, lived in Japan, and Portugal, but have spent the majority of my life living in the United States. I have lived in the United States for over 15 years. People do not understand the amount of energy it takes to constantly be on the receiving end of this loaded question. It’s tiring and frustrating being constantly questioned and feeling like I am a foreigner wherever I am. I am never American enough❌Asian enough❌or Filipino enough❌ When people ask me where I am from, I always say Raleigh, North Carolina. But 99% of the time, people will follow up with, “BUT where are you REALLY from.” And I go into so much stress because I do not want to have to explain my history and justify anything to anyone. When I traveled to Southeast Asia, I’d tell people that I am from the United States, and the locals would tell me, “but you don’t look American.” 👉🏽What they really mean = You are not white‼️ The next time you want to open your mouth to ask this question: don’t. There are so many other ways to get to know someone than constantly questioning their identity.
